Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil stripping in advance of mineral extraction, within part of a site where earlier evaluation had revealed concentrations of Iron Age and Romano-British features. Within the area covered by the watching brief, only one trial trench had revealed features, comprising a possible ditch terminal and a possible pit. During the watching brief, a series of ditches representing part of a rectilinear field system were recorded and two pits, one of which was of Iron Age date, were excavated. A small quantity of flintwork of a broadly Neolithic character was recovered, and a few sherds of Iron Age and Romano-British pottery were found. It was concluded that an Iron Age or Romano-British origin for the field system could not be ruled out, but that it may have been of medieval date. [AIP] |
