Abstract: |
Five test pits were excavated to determine whether any archaeological deposits were present across the site, and to assess the palaeoenvironmental potential of the fluvial deposits suspected to lie buried there. Several other test pits excavated for engineering purposes were also examined. The test pitting demonstrated the probability that no significant archaeological deposits survived on site. That was not to say, however, that lost objects of archaeological significance might not lie buried in the alluvium, either as debris that had been swept downstream and incorporated in the riverside muds, or else jettisoned from the nearby shores. There might have also been deliberately placed special objects, like many examples previously found along the littoral zone of the Thames. Off-shore archaeological structures of importance might also have been present on site, despite there being only fluvial deposits. These could include the bases of the wooden piles of groynes or staging, revetments and boats, and future archaeological work on site should be directed towards the discovery of these and their recording.
