Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during topsoil stripping and the excavation of foundation trenches prior to residential development. The earliest feature located was the lower part of of a cellar associted with the southern of three connecting tenements existing in 1868. Although this part of that long structure was entirely of brick the presence of chalk in the foundations and of chalk rubble in the backfill material suggested an even earlier origin. Within the backfill material two fragments of stonework recovered appeared to be medieval in origin, but may have come from another source. No pre-18th century archaeological features were found [Au(adp)] |
