Abstract: |
Evaluation excavation showed that the northern side of the churchyard was formerly marked by an earthwork bank, probably constructed in the medieval period. The churchyard within the old boundary had numerous burials ranging from medieval to perhaps 19th century in date, a significant proportion of which were not marked by headstones. The area to the north of the former churchyard wall, now part of the churchyard, contained at least one unmarked burial of relatively recent date. There was surviving archaeological evidence for the development of St. Mary's Church. It was likely that similar results would be obtained from further excavation within the churchyard at Norton.
