Abstract: |
Two trial pits and a radar survey were carried out at the east end of Hereford Cathederal. The work was an attempt to discover the origins of a hole which had appeared near to the cathederal and to see how useful radar was for such tasks. The results showed that the hole was found to have been caused by the decay of a sandstone cap which had been placed over a void at some point in antiquity (possibly during the medieval period). Another trench revealed a brick lined grave and a lead lined coffin. Radar was found to be a useful tool and correctly identified the location of the shaft grave along with other possible graves.
