Abstract: |
This project was undertaken in response to a proposal by Northumbrian Water Limited to insert a pipeline and series of pumping stations in the vicinity of Shiremoor. The line of this pipeline lay close to a probable prehistoric enclosure, and crossed several colliery railways and an area of ridge and furrow. A desk-based assessment of the impact of the pipeline scheme upon the archaeology of the area proposed that a geophysical survey should be conducted to identify any previously unrecorded archaeological features. In addition, it was recommended that a watching brief be maintained during the construction of the pipeline to record any archaeological deposits encountered during the works. The watching brief uncovered the remains of a portion of the East Holywell Colliery Railway. It also demonstrated that no traces of prehistoric features associated with the enclosure survived within the extent of the cable trench. [Au(abr)] |
