Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken prior to the construction of a sewage pipeline between Glossop Water Treatment Works and Charlesworth Water Treatment Works. The study area comprised a 200m wide corridor centred on the proposed line. In addition to this corridor, the assessment took into consideration the broader locality in order to place the proposed pipeline within its wider archaeological context. The Roman fort known as Melandra Castle, which lay c.0.5km north-east of the study area, was a SAM. The study area itself contained no sites with statutory protection, and no sites were known within the study area which were of national importance and therefore merited preservation in situ. It was possible that the study area itself was crossed by the line of a Roman road believed to have run from Melandra to Stockport. It was recommended that a watching brief be carried out to record any remains of this road which may be brought to light during earthmoving works. A possible building platform of unknown date was identified in the study area during the site walkover. This would have also been crossed by the proposed pipeline, and it was recommended that it be evaluated by trial trenching. [Au(abr)]
