Abstract: |
During January 2001, HAT carried out topsoil stripping, trial trenching and test pitting on land adjacent to Dunmow Junior School. This investigation was followed by a programme of archaeological excavation, monitoring and recording, prior to, and during, the construction of new classroom facilities and ancillary works. The initial work revealed layers of made ground of recent date overlying stratified Roman deposits. The latter were associated with the Romano-British small town present at Great Dunmow. The excavation and monitoring and recording revealed a number of features, mostly Roman in date, though a few undated features may have been prehistoric in origin. There were also a small number of post-medieval features. Most notable amongst the features excavated were four 2nd century AD urned Roman cremations with accompanying pottery vessels. [Au(abr)] |
