Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with the conversion of a shop to a public house. Prehistoric worked flints, an Iron Age occupation site, a Roman kiln and a number of Saxon features had been recorded in the vicinity of the site. During the watching brief, extensive 19th and 20th century disturbance was observed. However, to the rear of the main building, evidence of a ploughsoil of possible medieval date which overlay a late Saxon post hole was recorded. One post-medieval and one post-medieval to modern post hole were also observed, whilst two fragments of unstratified late Saxon pottery suggested the presence of disturbed features of this date.
