Abstract:		 A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed waterfront development of East Cowes. The assessment identified 26 sites of archaeological/historical significance within the study area. Furthermore, the assessment a moderate potential for archaeology dating to the Eocene horizon, a moderate potential for archaeology dating to the Palaeolithic, an unknown potential for archaeological remains dating to the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period and a high potential for the discovery of sub-surface archaeological deposits dating to the early medieval, later medieval and post-medieval periods. The assessment also identified a high potential for the preservation of archaeological features within the inter-tidal and sub-tidal zone. And a high potential along the present High Street, which may have delineated the original shore line prior to land reclamation. [Au(adp)]
