Abstract: |
Six wooden lighters, up to 18m in length and in an excellent state of preservation, were recorded in a two trench archaeological evaluation and subsequent watching brief. The lighters had been used as the main structural elements in a river wall. Cartographic evidence dated the construction of the wall to between 1843 and 1860, suggesting that the lighters could have been built as early as 1820. The timber and concrete remains of a late 19th century wharf, previously and erroneously thought to have been the remains of a World War I submarine pen, was also recorded. [Au] |
