Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of a pipe trench and a deep shaft for the installation of a new pumping station at the Dover Citadel, constructed in the early 19th century. The principal discoveries of interest related to the structure of the West Sallyport entrance. From the recorded observations it seemed that the original granite paving of the entrance passage still survived largely intact below the modern concrete and tarmac surface. A contemporary iron rail set in concrete along the south-eastern side of this early paving may have been interpreted as relating to a sliding bridge that originally crossed the moat. [Au(abr)] |
