Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was undertaken in the garden of Leighton House in order to provide information to assist the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Libraries and Arts Service in identifying a suitable way to restore the garden to a form that it might have had in the late 19th century when Lord Leighton lived there. An earthwork and vegetational survey, resistivity survey and trial trenching were undertaken. A remarkably uniform sequence of deposits was shown by the trial trenching and two mounds, features constructed when the garden was laid out were also investigated. A path was shown to have been relaid several times and traces of a piggery that stood on the land before Lord Leighton bought it were found. There was no indication of widespread elaborate bedding or parterres. [AIP] |
