Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the construction of a youth centre within Kirton, a town which had been important in the medieval period, but had since declined. The site lay close to the 12th century parish church. An earlier evaluation at the site had revealed a late Saxon pit filled with animal manure and charred crop processing waste, which had indicated the possibility of a farmyard having existed in the vicinity. Evidence of later medieval and post-medieval activity, consisting of pits and a hearth, had also been found. One pit had contained refuse from horn-working. Dwellings had been constructed along the High Street frontage in the 19th century. During the watching brief, the edge of a pond was identified, the existence of which had been surmised from the evaluation evidence. Three pits were also observed, two of which were associated with 20th century demolition. Artefacts included an assemblage of pottery dating from the medieval period to the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as clay pipes and three animal bones which showed evidence of butchery. [Au(adp)]
