Abstract:
A programme of ongoing archaeological excavations carried out ahead of sand extraction had been undertaken from 2001-2004. This interim report summarised the evidence from 2001-2004. The site contained archaeological features and finds ranging in date from the Late Mesolithic to the post-medieval period. Before 2004, features identified included the following: Prehistoric post-pits, some of which were in alignment, a hengiform enclosure with possible associated cremation burials, barrow with further burials accompanied by food vessels and beakers, trackways, field systems and later medieval/post-medieval field boundaries. The 2004 work added to this by identifying a small barrow with an associated burial containing beaker, with evidence for a late individual being inserted into the grave with the previous individuals bones being carefully stacked against the side of the grave. Another associated grave had the original crouches burial removed leaving only the articulated right foot and had been replaced by a dog burial (undated). Further excavations were planned for 2005-2006 and it was predicted the site would be fully published after the last phase of work in 2006-2007. [AIP]
