Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for extensions. The site lay within an area of possible medieval settlement and it was thought that the excavations might disturb archaeological remains relating to this. A moderate amount of brick fragments and complete hand-made bricks were noted in the spoil. A small number of cut stone blocks were also noted in the spoil. The bricks and stone may have come from the demolished outhouse. The remains of a modern brick wall projected into the eastern trench. The extension to the Old Post Office occupied the frontage between the Old Post Office and the 16th century almshouses to the west. The excavation of the northern trench was observed and natural red sand and clay was reached at a depth of 0.1m below ground level. No finds or features were noted in the trench. A number of finds of 18th/19th century pottery and glass were noted in the spoil from topsoil stripping. [Au(abr)]
