Abstract: |
The watching brief identified several previously unrecorded features, all of which are attributed to the post-medieval period. Most of the features thought to be of this period, relate to old field boundaries or field drainage. A possible pre-parliamentary enclosure field boundary was noted. A further, more unusual feature, was a large beam of worked wood with associated iron artefacts, which had been laid in the subsoil near the river Caldew. Whilst probably quite late in date, and its precise function remained unclear, it may have been the remains of a temporary flood defence measure. [Au(abr)] |
