Abstract:
A programme of archaeological observation was undertaken during the groundwork associated with the installation of a lift and other services at Wilberforce House. An area was excavated for the lift to a depth of around 2.25m below ground floor level. At a level 3.56OD, a brick surface was exposed which may have been part of a 'half-cellar' floor laid when the property was redeveloped in the 1660s. Beneath this floor was the foundation of s substantial brick wall up to 0.8m thick. This wall may have been part of St. John Lister's late 16th century house, the predecessor of the present building. Beneath was a later medieval horizon. One other notable feature was a narrow culvert constructed of medieval brick and running east-west along the south wall. Excavation of a trench within a toilet block in the south-east part of the building exposed a barrel vaulted brick culvert running in an approximately south-west north-east alignment. This culvert may well have been of 18th or early 19th century date. [Au(abr)]
