Abstract: |
Archaeological desk-based assessment and site inspection of the former Wimbledon Mills building led to the conclusion that none of the buildings on the site are of listable quality or of any great architectural merit. However, the building did have some limited value in a local context. The building was of some value as part of the well-preserved late 19th and early 20th century industrial buildings in the area of Leicester associated with the clothing and shoe industries. It was recommended that the alterations made during the conversion, chiefly any alterations to the windows, be sympathetic to the environment of existing buildings on Wimbledon Street. Consultation of the Leicestershire and Rutland SMR indicated that the site lay outside the historic core of Leicester and although Roman and medieval finds had been made in the vicinity these were unlikely to be recovered from the site itself.
