Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken prior to the installation of a new floor slab in the nave and the north aisle of the church, and the provision of a kitchen and toilet facilities. The church was largely 14th century in date, though incorporated elements of earlier structural phases. Archaeological features and deposits associated with the history of the church were encountered immediately beneath the existing floor surface in both the north aisle and the central aisle of the nave. A partially intact burial and several possible grave cuts were encountered in trench A, and two further graves were seen in Trench B. Although some grave clearance had at some time been carried out within the church, evidenced by a scatter of small bones in the grave in trench A and the charnel deposit in Trench B, further undisturbed burials were likely to have survived within the study area. Other features and deposits representing post-medieval internal alterations to the church were also seen in Trench A. The original ground level outside of the church at the time of the building of the north wall of the north aisle was perhaps indicated by the level of the top of the three foundation courses exposed in the test pit. These foundation courses in turn rested on a sandstone rubble plinth, cut into the natural sandy subsoil. The top of this plinth course lay some 200mm above the level of the corresponding floor inside the church. This suggested that the floor here had already been lowered at some time, a suggestion reinforced by the shallow depth of a child burial encountered in trench A, which lay at a depth of only 280mm below the existing floor surface.
