Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that a number of findspots had been recorded in the vicinity. Artefacts found included single potsherds of Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and medieval date, and Mesolithic flints. A Roman road passed nearby, and the possible remains of a medieval road had been identified. A 17th-18th century occupation site had also been recorded. The proposal site itself appeared not to have previously been developed, and had been used as allotments since 1937. It was concluded that further testing of the site's archaeological potential would be necessary, and that the most practical method of investigation would comprise trial trenching on undisturbed land, and machine cleaning on those parts of the site which had already been stripped of topsoil and/or subsoil in preparation for construction.
