Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for an extension to a hotel, at a site where an earlier evaluation had revealed two medieval pits. Six further pits, containing 12th-14th century pottery, were identified, and one post-medieval pit containing fragments of clay pipe and a sherd of late 17th- early 18th century pottery was recorded. Two undated pits and two possible wall foundations were also observed. It was concluded that the medieval pits may have been nearly contemporary with the initial construction of an undercroft which survived near the front of the hotel. [Au(adp)] |
