Abstract: |
Map and documentary research indicated that the site had undergone rapid development during the period between the tithe map and a railway plan of 1855, which included the constuction of a gas works across the site. While map evidence, dating to 1783 at the earliest, had failed to establish settlement within the proposed development area, the southern shore of Lake Lothing and the Kirkley Ham must have been a prime site for the location of a shipbuilding industry known to exist in Kirkley during the 14th century. The medieval shoreline undoubtedly lay well back from the existing dock frontage, but there was certainly a potential to establish its location by a programmed of trenching, and, within the same scheme, to record associated settlement evidence on the higher ground beyond.
