Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of five alternative route options for a proposed bypass around the town of Alderley Edge. Prehistoric finds were known from the general area and the study area hosted medieval settlement and agricultural land use, numerous features surviving. The post-medieval period saw the continuing occupation of the existing country houses as well as the construction of new ones, and the study area retained an essentially rural character. The arrival in the 1830s of the railway led to a rapid growth in the size of the village. [Au(abr)] |
