Abstract: |
St Mawgan in Pydar Church is a Grade I Listed building. It stood in a curvilinear boundary enclosure that suggested the possibility that this was an early medieval ecclesiastical site or lann. However, within the areas exmained, no evidence for an early medieval ecclesiastical site was discovered. Details of seventeen graves containing the remains of at least 20 individuals were recorded. Six of the burials, predominantly the later ones, proved to be in coffins. The rest were shroud burials. Two distinct groups of graves, probably family burial plots were observed. The sequence of graves encountered showed a change in the pattern of burials through time. No direct dating evidence for the graves was obtained though they post date the 13th century transept, and pre-date the 1861/62 building of the vestry.[Au(abr)] |
