Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of four residential properties. The SMR indicated that the potential for identifying material relating to the urban development of Godalming, from the early medieval period onwards, was good to high. Although no archaeological material had been found specifically from this site, this was as likely to have been due to a lack of recent development, and hence lack of archaeological survey, as to an absence of deposits. Excavations carried out in similar plots to the rear of these street frontage properties had generally produced medieval to post-medieval features and in several instances a layer of loam with pottery dating from the 13th to 19th century had been revealed, for example at 777 High Street and to the rear of Old Jaeger factory close to the route of the relief road, and the more substantial quantities of Mesolithic flint at the Mint Street and Co-Operative sites. Evidence relating to prehistoric activity within Godalming was scarce, with evidence generally taking the form of worked flint, for example a prehistoric flint scraper and flakes were recovered during an investigation of medieval and post-medieval features in the garden at the rear of Angel Court. The early cartographic evidence revealed that the site lay within the bounds of the early town plan, although it may have been at too great a distance from the street frontage to provide any particularly strong or coherent evidence relating to the structural development of this section of the Church Street and Mint Street. It could, however, contain artefactual and/or backlands evidence which would help confirm or clarify the suggestion for the development of Godalming put forward as a result of the adjacent Mint Street excavations. The site lay within both Godalming's Conservation Area, and the Area of High Archaeological Potential designated by Surrey County Council's Principal Archaeological Officer. The evidence examined above further supported the site's archaeological potential, particularly the evidence from the excavation of the adjacent Mint Street Car Park site. The majority of the site, however, had already been disturbed, and would not be greatly affected by the proposed development, except for a small part of the garden. It was therefore recommended that an archaeological watching brief be carried out during the development work, particularly concentrating on the groundworks in the garden area, and the small extensions that would open out onto the rear gardens.
