Abstract: |
The report identifed archaeological and historical sites within Braddock Down in order to establish the historic character and overall archaeological and historical significance of the area. The study area lay in an area of enclosed farmland, resulting from the enclosure of former heathland in the 18th and 19th centuries. Before this, the area was likely to have been open heathland from the Bronze Age through to the medieval period and later. The principal archaeological sites identified were six Bronze Age barrows (four of which were scheduled) and the site of the English Civil War Battle of Braddock Down, 1643 (included in English Heritage's National Battlefield Register). Other potential remains which were to be expected were sites associated with the barrow group and palaeoenvironmental evidence which may have survived in the marshy valley bottom. [AIP] |
