Abstract: |
Little Matlock Hamlet had been granted permission and listed building consent, subject to a Section 106 agreement, for a development at Low Matlock Wheel. English Heritage had advised that the archaeological implications of the work within the boundaries of the SAM 28999 could be adequately assessed on the basis of the available information and recommended that an archaeological field evaluation be carried out. The field evaluation was carried out and exposed archaeological remains associated with the former mill pond west of the existing buildings, and of the pathway and stone retaining wall that ran along the north bank of the mill tail goit. The steep gradient of the north bank of the goit prevented extensive excavations in the area of the former tilt hammer workshops and the extent and location of the potential remains of these structures remained unknown.
