Abstract: |
An evaluation of the archaeological and historical implications of clearing out two 19th century millponds at Tregunnick, an important farmstead, was undertaken. Tregunnick was a substantial house in the 17th century but by the 19th century had declined to be a typical Cornish farm. The installation of water-powered barn machinery was typical of 19th century Cornish farms, but the use of a plug hole sluice in the main pond, and of chains to transfer power from the waterwheel to the barn machinery, was unusual. The report described three millponds, the site of the waterwheel, the chainstem, a butterwell, the farm buildings and tailrace. [Au(adp)] |
