Abstract:
The evaluation recorded a group of prehistoric features, probably representing settlement in the northern part of the site. These features, which included a group of six post holes, part of a ditch and a pit, were probably contemporary with the remains of an unurned cremation and possibly with a hearth, neither of which contained dateable material. In trench 49, a deposit rich in small fire-cracked flints, probably pot boilers, overlay a possible sunken floor, a linear slot containing charred wood and part of a shallow pit, all seemingly associated with the six post holes mentioned above. These features were interpreted as the possible remains of a prehistoric structure. A group of medieval features was exposed on the south-east corner of the site. These were interpreted as ditches and post holes, although two shallow, linear features may have represented the remains of beam slots. The presence within these features of 51 potsherds of the early Norman period and 204 sherds of later medieval date along with large numbers of bone fragments and oyster shells, pointed to two periods of prolonged and/or intensive domestic activity during the medieval period.
