Abstract: |
An archaeological topographic survey was undertaken on an area of land that formed part of a Roman settlement known as 'Bays Meadow' and was protected as an SAM. The survey was required in order to inform plans for the construction of a security fence around the perimeter of the site, and more generally to determine the extent and level of vulnerability of any surviving archaeological remains, with a view to their future management. The survey showed that while a large portion of the area had been subject to archaeological excavation between 1967 and 1977, archaeological features remained within the area, in particular two Roman buildings, one of which survived as a stone foundation and the other as a series of stone-robbing trenches. In addition, the former rampart surrounding the Roman settlement survived as a low earthwork crossing the centre of the site. [Au(abr)] |
