Abstract: |
The excavation of a cable trench was required to supply electricity from the substation at Back Elvet Bridge to a new retail developement to the north of the bridge. The trench ran through the landward arch of Elvet Bridge, a Scheduled Monument, and, as the area surrounding the bridge was archaeologically sensitive, monitoring was undertaken. The position of a brick wall with stone wall or floor foundation was recorded giving evidence of the survival at this depth of part of the complex of iron foundry workshops shown on 19th century maps.
