Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment, the main component of which was the construction of a basemented warehouse type building. The potentially untruncated area within this footprint was c.30m x 36m, an open area presently capped with concrete hard standing. Possible archaeological deposits and features were, in summary: The course of Stane Street Roman road (parallel with modern London Road) and its defining ditch (previously found nearby), in the north-west corner of the site; Roman remains associated with the road, and with the nearby Roman settlement (in Ewell Village); Undated, backfilled depressions in the underlying natural clay, located by analysis of engineers' site investigations, in the north-west corner of the site. Part of the Nonsuch Pottery buildings probably lay under the modern building in the east of the site (and beyond). The (known) associated ponds lay beyond the site altogether, but the profile of the unidentified, backfilled depressions on site may have indicated further and previously unknown ponds used as a constant water supply for puddling clay. The principal impact of the proposed works would be a basement c.4m deep below ground level, removing potential archaeological deposits and features beneath the c. 0.3m thick modern concrete slab. The top of the natural (which was clay) varied between -2.1m and -0.5m bgl, with an average 1.11m bgl (the deeper figure is for the unidentified, backfilled depressions, probably artificially formed). The report concluded that trial trenches may be necessary to determine the exact nature and extent of the depressions, their backfill and the surviving archaeology (if any). [Au(abr)]
