Abstract: |
A cultural heritage appraisal of the proposed site of a wastewater treatment works identified that the site lay close to several Areas of Archaeological Potential, but that these would not be affected by the development. A small number of prehistoric artefacts, including Palaeolithic flints, two polished Neolithic axes and a carved boar's tusk of Bronze Age date had been recovered in the vicinity of the site, and Bronze Age barrows lay in the surrounding area. An Iron Age settlement, later replaced by a Roman villa (Scheduled Ancient Monment IW35), lay to the north, and the remains of a Roman field system (SAM IW51) had also been recorded. The area continued to be settled in the Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods. It was noted that the site had some potential for maritime archaeology offshore, and that deposits of alluvium which were present also had some archaeological potential. It was recommended that the line of a proposed long sea outfall should be investigated prior to the excavation of the pipe trench, and that excavations into the alluvium and for the outfall pipeline should be archaeologically monitored.
