Abstract: |
The desktop assessment demonstrated that the general area of the site was used for burial in the Romano-British period, appearing to focus on an established network of Roman roads that converged on a probable bridging/fording point over the River Avon on the vicinity of the present day Pulteney Bridge. There was no evidence for Saxon or medieval activity in the area, with post-medieval documents indicating a rural landscape populated with thinly spread isolated farmsteads. The late 18th and early 19th centuries saw the expansion of the city and significant changes at the site. The construction of a canal signified the start of a sustained period of development which may have disturbed any Roman deposits. The canal and its associated structures, however, were also important monuments. [Au(adp)] |
