Abstract:
Three trenches were excavated to examine potential archaeological deposits. The earliest deposit identified during this investigation was natural alluvium associated with the former marshes upon which King's Lynn was built. Earlier medieval remains were only revealed on the Norfolk Street frontage of the site. Two pits, primarily for refuse disposal of the 13th century were excavated and revealed evidence for a smithy that produced fish hooks, a rare example of this industry. Later in the medieval period extensive flooding affected Norfolk Street. This alluvium was sealed beneath later medieval dumped deposits, possibly building floors. A north-south property was also uncovered. A quantity of cattle and goat horn cores in this ditch indicated that a horn worker was operating in the vicinity. Occupation of the northern, Austin Street, side of the site commenced in the post-medieval period. Facing onto Austin Street was the cellar of a post-medieval building that had gradually been infilled during the 18th century. Dumping and ground raising operations, also occurred along Norfolk Street through the post-medieval period. Pottery retrieved from the site included locally and regionally made medieval and post-medieval wares. [Au(abr)]
