Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation on the diversion of Kent No.5 Feeder Pipeline was undertaken. Although the pipeline diversion work was specified as "strip, map and sample", archaeological visibility was invariably very poor throughout all areas, due to the presence of a silty clay horizon, a plough-disturbed head or colluvial deposit. As the topsoil stripping was a temporary measure, undertaken to provide working and spoil storage areas, there was no justification for removing the deposit to expose archaeological features. The only permanent impact of the scheme was the pipe trench itself, a narrow slot in which no archaeological features were visible. A watching brief was maintained on the topsoil stripping, but no significant archaeological finds or deposits were discovered. [Au(adp)] |
