Abstract: |
The present site, which lay in the Central Conservation Area, took in two medieval burgage plots and included three Listed Buildings. The standing structures showed that in places substantial medieval and early post-medieval fabric survived though elsewhere there had been much 18th-20th century alteration. This preliminary assessment also demonstrated the survival of important previously unrecorded features in at least one of the unlisted buildings. The site lay in an area which had the potential to contain significant depths of archaeological deposits relating to the early growth of medieval settlement and subsequent development of the town. This part of Newcastle had seen little previous archaeological investigation. Fuller archaeological and architectural consultation, research, recording and analysis would be essential pre-requisites to progressing the development of the site. [Au(abr)] |
