Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a test pit, dug to establish the character of the foundations of a retaining wall which had been built over the line of the outer defensive wall at the north side of Oxford. The south face of a coursed rubble wall, and a second wall which extended above the ground surface, were revealed. Fragments of clay pipe stem and 13th-15th century pottery were recovered. Natural gravel was not reached in the pit, suggesting that the site overlay the infilled extra-mural ditch. [AIP] |
