Abstract:
Geophysical surveys were carried out within five areas in advance of the proposed enhancement of the recreational facilities. A combination of geomagnetic and electrical resistivity techniques were used in an effort to detect features possibly associated with an enclosure seen in air photographs and any additional settlement activity. The geophysical data provided no convincing evidence for the presence of a ditched or banked enclosure in any of the areas investigated. However, magnetometer surveys of ground immediately north and west of the Grandstand detected linear and curvilinear anomalies which may have represented segments of soil-filled ditches of archaeological interest. A network of distinct, high resistivity lineations west of the Grandstand provided important additional information, and may also have indicated the existence of ditches or paths of archaeological interest. Evidence was presented to indicate that a buried iron pipe (or plastic pipe with iron joints) existed beneath the east part of the North Pitch, to the north of the grandstand. It may be necessary to take account of this structure during groundworks for the proposed development. A set of regularly spaced geophysical lineations were detected in an area east of the pavilion and north of the machine compound. It was suggested that these anomalies reflected a former ridge and furrow cultivation scheme, or possibly tile or plastic land drains. [Au(abr)]
