Abstract: |
Investigation of a ground collapse in Kensington Palace Gardens revealed the crown of a previously unknown chamber. Stratascan was commissioned to carry out a geophysical survey to establish the possible extent of this and other buried structures within the vicinity of this chamber. The geophysical survey was successful in identifying subsurface structures including the known vault and access chamber on the site. The area of the access chamber was identified in the resistivity data, with the access chamber and part of the vault being clearly seen in the radar data. The area surrounding the known vault and access chamber was characterised in the magnetometer survey as magnetic debris. The radar survey identified an area immediately to the north of the known vault which may have been associated with the location of the bricked up opening seen inside the vault. Strong discrete radar anomalies were identified across the site. Many of these anomalies correlated with areas of high resistance and, in one case, a strong positive magnetic anomaly. These features were likely to have represented subsurface structures which may, depending on the degree of similarity with the known vault, have been further vaults. Deep broad crested anomalies were observed in the radar data. When mapped onto the site, these features appeared to lie in wide bands across most of the site. Given that the drift geology beneath the site was River Terrace deposits, it was likely that these features related to this drift geology rather than man-made structures. The magnetometer and radar surveys clearly identified the line of pipes running north south across the site. Four further possible pipes were identified by the magnetometer survey. [Au(adp)] |
