Abstract:		 An evaluation was carried out in order to assess three potential sites proposed for the construction of two classrooms. The school lay to the west of the surviving 16th century gatehouse of a Cistercian abbey, and was thought to lie within the abbey precinct. During the evaluation, the remains of a medieval stone structure and associated deposits were recorded. Features included two walls and a possible pit. Post-medieval remains relating to the school and to earlier buildings were also recorded, including an 18th century drain, a footing for an early 19th century outbuilding, a late 18th-19th century surface, a playground dividing wall and a garden or tenement wall. It was concluded that building option 3 would be likely to cause the least damage to medieval structures, and it was recommended that the footprint of the new extension should be archaeologically excavated before development.
