Abstract: |
A watching brief on trenches dug for the extension to the public house, within an area of considerable archaeological potential, showed a 20th century levelling layer possibly associated with pub's beer garden, sealing a thick layer of post-medieval rubbish representing an earlier buried garden soil. Two medieval pottery sherds were recovered. An infilled circular chalk block lined well was revealed, set in a construction pit whose fill contained 18th century clay pipes. The lack of medieval finds was surprising. [AIP] |
