Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a site where evaluation in 1993 had recorded a possible chalk house platform. Open area excavation in the grounds of Hinxton Hall had revealed prehistoric remains, including pits, quarry pits, a ditch and a chalk-cut shaft. These contained flint artefacts and pottery dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. Settlement of Early to Late Saxon and early medieval date had also been recorded. This was represented by a succession of timber buildings with associated rubbish pits, ovens, hearths and wells. During the 1996 evaluation, 18th century or later garden features containing re-used Welsh roofing slate were revealed within two trenches, and undated features were found within a further two. It was concluded that the platform observed in 1993 had been an isolated entity, and that no other buildings had existed in this part of the grounds. The features indicated that more formal gardens had once existed in this area. [AIP] |
