Abstract:
The geophysical survey formed part of an archaeological evaluation of a proposed gravel extraction site adjacent to Horcott Quarry. This survey confirmed that widespread archaeological remains were present at the site and suggested they may have been rather more extensive in their distribution than was indicated by the 1989 trenching results. A system of ditched enclosures, possibly bounded to the west by a trackway, extended across much of the raised ground in the centre of the site and appeared to have been associated with numerous other archaeological features, probably including settlement remains. Such features were particularly concentrated towards the south of the site in the vicinity of the Roman structure excavated near area A, but continued towards the north and east. It was possible that some of the smaller magnetic anomalies detected by the survey may have been of geological origin, but the good correspondence between the survey and trenching results suggested that much of the geophysical response was archaeologically significant and that archaeological features were widespread across the centre of the site. Ditches and enclosures extended towards the eastern boundary of the site, but the significance of findings to the west (e.g. the magnetic anomalies around P) remained uncertain. [Au(adp)]
