Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was undertaken during the construction of an extension to the rear of a property. An L-shaped foundation trench was excavated by hand to a depth of approximately 1.0m and to a width of 0.50m. The natural substrate was not encountered during the work, but instead a sequence of three stratified layers were recorded. The earliest of these was only partially exposed, but produced a single sherd of Roman pottery and a large fragment of Roman flue tile from a hypocaust system, indicating perhaps the latest Roman occupation level. This was sealed by a thick layer of post-medieval ground build up that was in turn overlain by a modern construction layer. [Au(adp)] |
