Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment, comprising a desk-based study and site inspection was undertaken on the site of the old gasworks at Penzance. The site was divided into two distinct areas, each with a different history of use and different archaeological potential. Area 1 was the former foreshore, built over in the 19th century by the gasworks. There was the possible scope for palaeoenvironmental evidence which may have survived in foreshore deposits and of pre-19th century use of the foreshore. Area 2 was the higher ground to the rear of Market Jew Street and was the part of the town occupied since the medieval period. Evidence for medieval and later activity on the site was expected here. Further evaluation work was recommended should further development work take place. [AIP] |
