Abstract: |
An intermittent watching brief was undertaken at a trench being hand excavated by contractors between the moat around the Norman motte at Tonbridge Castle and a tributary of the River Medway. It was hoped that evidence would be obtained to show whether or not the bank between moat and stream was an original medieval feature or the result of alluvial deposition and/or 19th century landscaping. Either interpretation may have indicated that this portion of the moat, on the south-west side of the motte, was not an original feature of the late 11th century castle. No archaeological evidence was found to prove the point, but it was considered likely that the bank separating the moat from the stream on the south of the motte was an original feature. [Au(adp)] |
