Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for the construction of garages. Monitoring of the groundworks revealed archaeological deposits relating to the medieval period, the majority being 12th to 13th century in date. A sequence of pits, ditches, postholes, occupation layers and dumping deposits and a cobbled hard standing, all of medieval date, were noted as underlying the reduced ground level. Two later, post-medieval ditches were also recorded. Artefacts recovered throughout the duration of the watching brief included pottery fragments dating between the 12th and 19th centuries, ceramic building material, a clay tobacco stem, animal bone, oyster shell, burnt stone and daub.
