Abstract:
Ten trial trenches were excavated as Phase One of an archaeological evaluation required as a conditon upon planning consent for the residential development of the site. These trenches were positioned in order to examine the former boundaries, the line of the access road, the proposed residential unts and to generally achieve a broad coverage of the site. A number of features associated with the former nurseries were revealed. A structure, which may have been associated with brick foundations revealed in trench 10, was shown on the 1914 OS map. The recent owners upon visiting the site had spoken of a coal shed or boiler which was supported by the frequet occurence of coal and cinder in the topsoil. An existing boundary co-incident with one depicted on a map of 1783 investigated in Trench 8 was felt by the excavator to be a recent cut due to it's near vertical profile suggestive of a machine cut. The report concluded that there was little known archaeology across the sit and that much of the area formed part of the Cheshunt Common during the medieval period. [Au(adp)]
